Source says Russia’s MTS to provide satellite TV services

mts03MOSCOW, Jan 31 (PRIME) -- Major Russian mobile operator MTS plans to launch satellite TV services, a source at the operator’s partner-company said Thursday, as cited by RIA Novosti.

The source said that MTS had bought five transponders installed on the ABS-2 communications satellite, which is to be put into operation in July–September.

“The operator has announced a tender for supplies of satellite receivers supporting the third generation (3G) communications standards, therefore, the operator is likely aimed at providing interactive TV services,” the source said.

MTS declined to provide comments.

Another source said that China’s Coship Electronics will likely be selected as the supplier of subscriber equipment for MTS’ satellite business. The source said that the first batch of receivers will be supplied to MTS in April–June.

Using five transponders of the ABS-2 satellite, MTS will be able to broadcast from 150 to 180 television channels, Russian satellite operator RuSat CEO Sergei Alymov said.

The ABS-2 satellite will be located 75 degrees East Longitude. The satellite’s location covers almost all of Russia, except north of the Arctic Circle.
